Google Ads still sits at the top for therapy lead generation. On average, people search for mental health help more than any other health-related category, and therapy-intent keywords convert at rates between 6 percent and 11 percent on average.
After helping several businesses across Canada and the US, I know what it takes to create a winning Google Ads strategy. These are finer details that most miss but have a huge impact on your ad campaign’s quality and performance. As a local Google Ads specialist in Mississauga, I recommend using every single technique mentioned below when building your therapy Google Ads campaign.
Ways To Lower CPC in Google Ads For Therapists
1. Focus on keywords within your niche
With mental health therapy, you are limited when choosing keywords to target. “trauma therapist in Mississauga” is a no-go because a campaign with that keyword won’t be approved. At the same time, you cannot simply target “therapist near me”. It’s high volume, low quality, and not the most precise.
But you can choose “EFT therapist in Brampton”, “EMDR therapist near me”, “inner child healing therapist“, or “self confidence therapy”.
On the other hand, for a registered massage therapist ad, you have more freedom to choose keywords. The best way forward is to phrase match keywords in your niche. Pick “registered massage therapist near me”, instead of “massage therapy” or “therapist near me“.
2. Always phrase match expensive keywords
A little trick that 90% of the marketers miss. When targeting niche keywords, you CANNOT leave them on as a broad match. Google will pick up works from it and show the ad for irrelevant searches.
Here’s an example:
anxiety therapist near me – set a broad match and could show the ad for therapy near me, what does anxiety therapy include, Do I need therapy for anxiety, free anxiety therapy.
However, if you phrase match it, which looks like “anxiety therapist near me”, it will only rank for that particular search term and “anxiety therapy in Brampton”, “anxiety therapist in Brampton”.
3. Run location tight campaigns
Therapy is a local service. People rarely drive across the city for weekly sessions, yet many campaigns target entire regions like the GTA, Metro Vancouver, or all of Calgary.
Narrow your targeting to 4-5 neighbourhoods or postal codes where your actual clients come from. You can even split campaigns by region if you serve two nearby areas.
4. Run ads on a schedule
Late nights and weekends bring the highest number of “browsers” who click but rarely book therapy services. On the other hand, weekday mornings, lunch hours, or early evenings, are peak hours and bring in targeted clicks.
If you offer in-person therapy or have limited time to answer calls, keep your schedule tight. Run ads only from 9 to 5 on weekdays and shorten or remove weekends entirely.
If your clinic has more availability, you can expand the window to 9 to 9 on weekdays and 9 to 3 on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays.
5. Niche down demographic targeting
I’ve listed these strategies in particular order, but this one takes the number #1 spot. Google lets you adjust your audience based on income tiers, age, gender, life segments, habits, behaviours, and more. For example, couples counseling performs better with married adults in higher income ranges.
Without this, you’re setting up your campaign for failure. There’s literally no saving from this point.
Take time to find out who your best client could be. List down what they like doing in their spare time, where they spend their money, and the kind of lifestyle they provide.
6. Keep excellent ad quality score and 100 percent campaign optimization score
I’ll be pretty straightforward here – if after doing everything you cannot maintain these scores, you don’t have a good campaign.
It just needs more work.
Here’s how to get your ad to excellent ad quality:
- Send traffic to a landing page instead of the homepage.
- Choose a small, intentional list of 8 to 11 keywords that share the same intent without repeating each other.
- Use all 15 headlines by adding keyword variations and related terms that support your service.
- Write four descriptions that each provide different information instead of repeating the same message.
- Add at least four sitelinks such as Fees, About the Therapist, Specialties, and Book a Session.
- Use structured snippets to outline your services, therapy approaches, or issues you support.
- Complete every available extension including call extensions, callouts, and location extensions.
- Match your ad copy with your landing page copy.
7. List negative keywords every 3–4 days
Google Ad campaigns, in general, pick up a lot of irrelevant searches like free counselling, therapy jobs, counselling courses, worksheets, or academic definitions. If you leave them running, Google starts spending money on these terms without you noticing.
Every 2-3 days, visit Insights and Reports > Search Terms to select and tag unwanted searches. Focus on those that have clicks, but also target a few zero click search terms if their impression count is over 10.
8. Optimize for page speed and security
Businesses can expect at least 60% of web traffic coming from phone mobile users. If your page loads slow or lacks SSL, takes longer than 3 seconds to load, or doesn’t have clickable CTAs, your CPC will go up.
9. Highlight brand messaging using structured snippets and sitelinks
Add sitelinks for Fees, About the Therapist, Specialties or Services, and Book a Session. These let you add more links to a single ad without the hassle of creating multiple ads.
Structured snippets are 30-character phrases that can be used to list your services. Callouts are another great extension, which are 25 characters long, and can help you provide obvious but important details, which include, open hours, free consultation, late night availability, locally owned, or all women team.
