How Google Maps Brings Walk-Ins to Your Career School (in Canada)

Most local searches begin online, even though the goal is in-person visits.

Students want to make sure they have all the information needed before contacting you.

And that includes – hours of operation, availability and class timings, program costs and financing options, location, and reviews of past students.

For career schools in Canada, your Google Business or Google Maps Profile is a discovery tool. At T Parker Marketing, we want someone to call or walk in straight from your listing. It’s likely that they’ll get distracted if they click on your website and are routed to a browser.

In this blog, I break down how to make your Google Maps Profile drive calls and walk-ins and optimize the listing with complete, high-quality information.

How Google Maps Listings Influence Walk-In Decisions

If your career school shows up on Google Maps but looks incomplete, outdated, or inactive, it’s working against your business goals.

While reviews matter, it isn’t the only metric they use to reach out. They care if you look open, real, and nearby.

  • Business Hours

Lack of business hours is the number 1 turn off for most profile visitors. Keep your hours updated, especially around holidays or program-specific schedules.

  • Reviews and Star Rating

A school with 4.8 stars and 90+ reviews will get picked over one with 4.1 and five reviews, even if the second one ranked higher than the other in local searches. These reviews don’t need to be just from students but anyone that’s interacted with your business. This includes program instructors, and any contractors that have worked with you.

  • Service Categories

Use the right category to help Google match you to the right searches. For example, use “Truck Driving School” or “Beauty School” instead of generic ones like “Educational Institution.” Adding a secondary category helps with visibility, but don’t force it if none are applicable.

  • Products and Services

As a service business, you’ll have to think creatively about products. For a makeup school, they could include different programs you offer – full-time and part-time as separate products, school tour, short courses, and kits.

Under services, just add a list of programs you offer.

For both, as a local keyword-rich description, a simple photo, and a Call To Action button, which could take them to the program page or call.

  • Photos of Your Space and Students

Avoid stock images at all costs. Real images of your building, classrooms, instructors, or student life will make people walk-in more likely. Begin with 20 photos in month 1, followed by 10 photos every month.

  • Posts and Updates

Weekly posts signal that your school is active and open. Promote enrollment deadlines, info sessions, new programs, or even testimonials.

  • Call and Direction Buttons

Both of these are conversion points on your career school’s Google Maps profile. Ensure it’s always updated and working.

What Optimised Listings Have That Yours Might Not

How to Rank Higher in Google Maps

Since I’ve covered the basics in the section – How Google Maps Listings Influence Walk-In Decisions, I’m going to mention strategies I use to further help my clients rank.

1. Geotag your images before uploading

Find a tool online to geotag your images with your school’s location. This will help you show up on near me searches.

2. Update your opening date and service areas

Add when your school was established. Include a few surrounding neighbourhoods or cities in the “areas we serve” section if you regularly draw students from those areas.

3. Use keywords in review replies

When you respond to reviews, mention the program or experience being referenced. It makes your listing more relevant.

4. Don’t use a shared address

If your school is inside a commercial building with multiple businesses, make sure your unit number and signage are clear. Incomplete address can work against you.

5. Check your map pin placement

Place your pin exactly where the front entrance is, not the parking lot or across the street. It can potentially ruin your business’s first impression.

6. Encourage photo uploads from students and visitors

Ask students to share images of their projects, first day, and graduation. User-generated content signals authenticity to both profile visitors and Google.

7. Host Google-backed events or virtual tours

Use Maps’ “Event” feature to list your info sessions or workshops. You can also add 360° virtual tour links to showcase your space.

8. Maintain consistent citations across directories

Ensure your school’s name, address, and phone number match exactly across key educational directories and review sites.

9. Use Google Q&A to preemptively answer questions

Populate the Q&A section on your listing with common questions (eg, “Do you offer night classes? Can I drop in for a tour?”). You can ask questions and answer them yourself.

10. Monitor and manage duplicates

If multiple listings exist for your school, request ownership and merge or delete extras. Duplicate listings dilute your visibility.

Bonus: Run Google Ads for local reach

Maps ads show your school at the top of local results with a small “Ad” tag and can be extremely cost-effective at around $1 to $5 per click. You only pay when someone taps your profile, gets directions, or calls.

It’ll work best once you’ve completely optimized the profile, but don’t have a lot of reviews yet. To boost conversions, offer some discounts or limited time promo.

How do I fix profile issues?

Many of my clients had issues with getting their profile approved or had multiple profiles. Sadly, these are common across businesses across the world.

If you’re struggling with either of these issues, reach out to Google’s Support team using this form. Continue clicking next until they offer you to send an email. Usually, you’ll get a reply back in 48 hours, but if you don’t, reply to the email confirmation you received to escalate the issue. Always tag your issues as urgent.

What Happens When You Do It Right (Case Studies)

Here’s what happened when we helped two Canadian career schools fully optimise their listings with strategy and consistency.

Truck Driving School – Brampton, Ontario

We’ve worked with this school since day one. From the start, we focused on building a complete Google profile: correct categories, review systems, real photos, and weekly updates. Today, they rank #1 for every relevant local search.

Their listing now brings in 52 to 60 calls every month and over 30 walk-ins, all directly from Maps (before counting any leads from website SEO). They currently have 130 reviews and is the first name you search when you search for AZ license training in Brampton.

Aesthetics School – Brampton, Ontario

This school had been in business for nearly a decade, but had no online presence. Their Google listing wasn’t verified, had no service information, and wasn’t showing up for local searches.

After a one-time optimisation, calls jumped from 10 per month to over 50. We added images of their space, listed their most in-demand programs, and helped them request reviews after each student completed a certification.

Frequently Asked Questions

What’s the difference between Google Maps and regular Google Search?

Google Maps shows location-based results for local services, while Search includes websites, ads, and directories.
Maps results are based on proximity, relevance, and profile quality. Career schools that show up on Maps often convert faster because users are looking for something nearby, with contact info and directions immediately available.

Can I show up in multiple cities even if I have one location?

Yes, if your listing is optimised for your service area. We use content and location data to help you rank in surrounding cities.
Google prioritises relevance, so we create city-specific content that gives you a better chance of showing up in searches outside your exact address.

How do I ask for reviews without sounding pushy?

Ask at natural milestones like after graduation or a successful license exam. Keep the request short and clear. Use SMS or email with a direct link. Mention it helps other students find the school.

Should I invest in Maps if most of my leads come from word of mouth?

Yes, because even referrals check your Google listing before calling. If your profile is outdated or inactive, they may drop off. A strong listing supports your word-of-mouth traffic and gives new students confidence that your school is real, open, and active in their area.

How do I know if my Google Maps profile is working?

You can track profile views, phone calls, website clicks, and direction requests through your Google Business dashboard. If these numbers are flat or slowly declining, you may need an update.

Can I use the same content from my website on my listing?

Some content can carry over, but your Google Business Profile needs shorter, more direct descriptions with keywords and location terms.

Will Maps help me even if I don’t have a website?

Yes. Many students take action directly from your Google Maps listing. If your profile is complete and optimised, they can call, get directions, and even view programs without visiting a website.

Can you set up and optimize the listing for me?

We do! We offer full setup, optimisation, and content writing for career schools. We add photos, service info, and programs, and make sure your listing ranks in the right local searches. If needed, we can also manage ongoing updates, reviews, and monthly improvements.

How long does it take to start showing up higher on Google Maps?

Most optimised listings begin to rank higher within four to six weeks. For more competitive areas, it can take longer and also need regular improvements. We make changes that Google recognises quickly, including review growth, category accuracy, and photo updates to keep your profile consistently visible.
